Antidepressants & Alcohol

Kelly Anne Spratt, D.O., Director of Women's Cardiovascular Health at the University of Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center, answers your questions.

Q. I have recently started taking Prozac for depression and one anxiety attack that I had recently. I realize you should not drink when taking antidepressants, and I don't; but, upon occasion, is it all right? On my upcoming vacations, I would love to be able to enjoy a glass of wine with a meal or perhaps before. I am talking about a glass or two, not the whole bottle.

A. Prozac is an antidepressant and alcohol, in general, is a mild central nervous system depressant, meaning that there may be some degree of counterbalance between the two. However, there is not a life-threatening type of interaction between Prozac and a small amount of alcohol. Vacation is meant to be restful and I see no harm in a glass of wine each day. Although the medication may be less effective, you may find the change of scenery and increased rest will balance in your favor. Enjoy!
