Make an Emergency Car Kit
Car safety kits can be purchased in the auto department of any discount store. Or compile your own in a duffel bag. Here's what to include:
- Jumper cables
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Emergency flares
- Lighter or strike-anywhere matches
- Tire gauge
- Tools: small hammer, screwdriver, pliers, pocket knife
- Bungee cords
- Motor oil and windshield washer fluid
- Gas can
- First-aid kit
- A phone book or address book with emergency numbers
- Auto paperwork: proof of insurance, car registration, service reports, accident reports, warranties, driver's manual
- Snacks and bottled water
- Extra cash and change
- Disposable camera (for documenting an accident)
- Blanket, gloves and hat, rain poncho
- Fire extinguisher
- Rope
- Compass

I'm surprised your list does not include an emergency hammer. A good one cost about $10 and worth so much more if you were ever trapped in your car unable to open a door. Good ones include a case that attaches to the inside of your car and a blade to cut stuck seatbelts. Everyone should have one in their car!
