Make a Bats-in-the-Belfry Pumpkin

Make this easy design by carving some simple architecture into your pumpkin. Add a swarm of plastic bats for a creepy effect.

What You'll Need

  • Pumpkin
  • Knife or carving tools
  • Black crafts paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Heavy-gauge wire
  • Plastic bats

For a list of tools, tips, and techniques, such as transferring your pattern, please see:

How to Make It

  1. Transfer the pattern onto the pumpkin.
  2. Using a knife or carving tools, cut out the openings.
  3. Use a gouge to cut the shingles, cutting just deep enough to reveal the pumpkin's inner rind.
  4. Paint the roof and belfry outlines black.
  5. Cut three lengths of heavy-gauge wire. Push one end of each wire into a plastic bat.
  6. Push the wired bats into the pumpkin.
