How to Prune

Pruning trees doesn't have to be a difficult task. Whether you're pruning fruit trees or hardwoods, we show you how to prune a tree, including tree-pruning tools, whether to use tree-pruning sealer, and the correct tree-pruning techniques.

Before you prune your trees, use these tips to avoid common pitfalls. Prune every year. Pruning is a large job if trees have been neglected, but it's a simple quick task if you keep up on it. Always trim trees in winter, except when trimming out a damaged or diseased limb. Don't prune young trees at all the first year after planting, except to remove any broken or dead branches. Always cut at a branching point, so you don't leave stubs. When you use shears, keep them turned, so the blade in on the inside of the cut. Keep shears sharp for easier cutting, but use a saw for larger branches. Don't use pruning sealer, which rarely provides any benefit. Follow these guidelines for a perfect prune every time.
