AnnualsAnnuals for Hanging Baskets

Q. Please suggest the best flowers to plant in my hanging baskets. They get full morning/early afternoon sun. Last year, I tried pansies and they are too "spindly" and grow in all odd directions. I would like something that will fall over the sides of the basket.

A. You can use any of the following annuals:
verbena
ivy geranium
bacopa
scaevola
trailing million bells

Hollyhock Pests

Q. I have scale and aphids on my hollyhocks. How do I get rid of both pests?

A. The easiest way to get rid of aphids is to simply wash them off the plant with a stream of water from a garden hose. If you do this every day or every other day, the problem should quickly go away.

Treat scales by using an insecticidal soap or systemic insecticide (be sure to follow the directions on the package). Check for either product at your local garden center.
