Simple Arbor

This simple arbor can frame a view, serve as an inviting gateway, or provide a verdant boundary for a patio or deck.

The Gateway

Erecting this structure takes only a couple of days, several days apart: one to dig postholes and set the posts, another -- after the concrete cures -- to cut and assemble the components. We used pressure-treated 4x4s for the posts and, to add to the beauty of the arbor, redwood for the superstructure.

What You Need:
  • 2 10-foot 4x4s (all lumber is cedar or treated)
  • 4 18-inch 2x6s
  • 2 6-foot 2x6s
  • 40 2-foot 2x2s
  • Galvanized or stainless steel fasteners (at least 3 inches long)
