Blend the subtle perfume of dried rose petals with aromatic spices and essential oils.
Place sachets in closets and drawers to impart their scent among sheets, towels, and clothing. When making sachets, begin with exquisitely fragrant roses, such as 'Blanc Double de Coubert,' 'Double Delight,' 'Fragrant Cloud,' ' Madame Alfred Carriere,' and 'Sombreuil.'
1. In a large glass or ceramic bowl, combine the rose petals, spices, and tonka beans. Add 20 drops each of the rose and musk essential oils. Stir well.
2. Place the mix in a 1-gallon wide-mouth glass jar. Store the jar in a dark place for three weeks to allow the sachet mix to age. Shake the jar daily to blend the contents.
3. Make sachets by placing 1/4 cup of the mix in the center of a 6-inch square of fabric. (Use scraps of cotton, linen, or other breathable cloth. Cut the fabric with pinking shears, for a decorative edge.)
4. Draw up the corners of the fabric to form a pouch. Tie a 12-inch length of ribbon around the gathered neck of the pouch. Repeat for each square. This recipe makes a dozen sachets.
