Vinca
Shiny green leaves and five-petaled open flowers in shades of blue, pink, and white characterize this bushy, 1- to 2-foot plant. Foliage also may be a variegated green and white. Bush types are usually about 1-1/2 feet tall. Annual varieties include dwarf bedding 'Little Pinkie,' 'Little Blanche,' and 'Little Bright Eye;' ground cover 'Polka Dot;' and the standard bush varieties.
Vinca likes full sun if soil is kept moist. In hot areas, give plants some shade. Any soil will be tolerated, but a rich type is preferred.
Seeds are slow to germinate; start indoors 3 months before the last frost, or buy started plants. Plant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Set 8 to 10 inches apart.
Borders, pots, tubs, and window boxes are all good spots for vinca. Shear plants if growth lags. Plants are perennial in warm areas, where they make a good ground cover.
