Verbena

Description
Enlarge Image Verbena

Both a creeping type and an upright mounding type are available. Each bears flat clusters of tiny, fragrant flowers in many colors, usually with white centers. Heights range from 6 to 15 inches.

Soil and Light

Verbenas like full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Most are heat-resistant.

Planting

Seeds need two weeks to germinate, so sow outdoors after the last frost, or start inside three months earlier. Started plants are generally available. Plant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Space 6 to 12 inches apart.

Special Helps

Creeping varieties are especially good ground covers; potted specimens do well in window baskets. Use others in rock gardens. Keep faded flowers snipped.
