For an inexpensive pot in almost limitless designs, terra-cotta is king. Mexican terra-cotta, known for its bright orange color, is less expensive than Italian terra-cotta, but also less weather-resistant -- it may last only a few years. Terra-cotta is porous so it allows soil to dry out quickly. It is also prone to salt crusting from fertilizers, which can be a nuisance to clean.
