Saving your web pages

Both the Windows and Macintosh versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer work identically when saving web pages:

1) On the File menu, click Save As.

2) Double-click the folder you want to save the page in.

3) In the File name box, type a name for the page.

4) In the Save as type box, select a file type.

Then do one of the following:

a) To save all of the files needed to display this page, including graphics, frames, and style sheets, click Web Page, complete. This option saves each file in its original format.

b) To save just the current HTML page, click Web Page, HTML only. This option saves the information on the Web page, but it does not save the graphics, sounds, or other files.

c) To save just the text from the current Web page, click Text Only. This option saves the information on the Web page in straight text format.

Saving your images

The Macintosh and Windows versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer work much the same when saving images from the browser.

To save an image, position your mouse cursor over the graphic that you're interested in saving. Pop up the "floating menu" (Windows: click on your right mouse button. Macintosh: click on your mouse button, and hold until the menu appears). Windows users should choose "Save Picture As...", while Macintosh users should choose "Download Image to Disk". You'll be prompted to name the file that the image is being saved to.

Windows Internet Explorer users may save images in either their original formats, .GIF or JPEG, or in .BMP format which is the native graphic format for Windows. Macintosh Internet Explorer users must save their images in their original formats, either alphabetically or by date.

Instructions for Netscape Navigator

Both the Windows and Macintosh versions of Netscape Navigator work identically when saving text. Simply choosing "Save As..." from the File menu will bring up a prompt asking for a file name under which to save the web page.

The Macintosh version gives the user the choice of whether to save a Web page as Text, which is a plain text file, or as Source, which is the actual HTML-formatted file that was downloaded from the Web. Windows users can only save as Text. If you are unsure which version to save, choose Text.

Saving your images

The Macintosh and Windows versions of Netscape Navigator work the same when saving images from the browser.

To save an image, position your mouse cursor over the graphic that you're interested in saving. Pop up the "floating menu" shown above (Windows: click on your right mouse button. Macintosh: click on your mouse button, and hold until the menu appears). Choose "Save this Image as..." and you'll be prompted to name the file that the image is being saved to.

Note that Netscape Navigator always saves images in the original format -- either .GIF or JPEG.

Make-a-Website 1-2-3 will be available until August 31, 2002
