Style on the Side
With beginner sewing skills, a few yards of fabric, and a weekend or less, you can create designer-look panels to set off your windows in style.
Triple Silks
Piece together three favorite-color silk fabrics for these style-smart panels, measuring 44 x 85-1/2 inches each.
- 1-2/3 yards cream-color silk fabric
- 1-2/3 yards taupe silk fabric
- 1-2/3 yards blue-green silk fabric
- 5 yards drapery lining
- Matching sewing threads
- 10 silver curtain clips
1. Sew with right sides together, using 1/2-inch seam allowances.
2. Cut two 29-1/2 x 45-inch pieces from the cream-color silk. (If your fabric is 54 inches wide, use the entire fabric width for fuller panels.) Repeat with the taupe and blue-green fabrics.
3. Cut lining fabric to make two 86-1/2 x 45-inch pieces. (If your silk fabric is 54 inches wide, cut the lining pieces to measure 86-1/2 x 54 inches.)
4. Pin one cream and one blue-green piece together, aligning one 45-inch edge. Sew together.
5. Pin one taupe piece to the opposite raw edge of the blue-green piece. Sew together. Press seam allowances open.
6. Pin lining to panel. Sew together, leaving a large opening along the bottom edge for turning. Turn right side out. Press the raw edges of opening under 1/2 inch. Press the entire panel. Using matching sewing threads, topstitch around entire panel. Repeat steps for second panel.
7. Attach curtain clips in even intervals along panel tops; hang panels from curtain rods.
