Smooth Moves: How to Reuse Window Treatments

Filling the Gaps
In your old master bedroom, the four windows wore traditional floor-length panels topped with valances. Your new bedroom has three windows about the same size with existing plantation shutters. The shutters are attractive and functional; the problem is the wide and awkward wall space between windows.

To eliminate this clumsiness, Reed suggests using three sets of the old panels mounted on extra-long rods. This bridges the gaps between the shuttered windows and creates the sumptuous illusion of a long, continuous run of draperies. The fourth pair of panels can be used to make swags to hang over the stationary panels.
Adding 2-inch bullion fringe to the swag hems will give your old draperies new detail and charm. If you prefer, use a new contrasting fabric for the swags to generate a different look. Hang the panels and swags on the rods with decorative wood or brass rings for a casually elegant look.
