Clever Curtain Hanger
Spare the rod -- and dress your windows with curtains hung on crystal door knobs.

Hang It Up
Crystal doorknobs and long velvet drapes team up for a window treatment that has an easy, buttoned-down elegance. A collection of knobs spaced 12 inches apart works the same way as a traditional Shaker peg rail. Use matching knobs for a more formal look, as we have. Or, experiment with a variety of styles in a casual or eclectic room.
Each fabric panel measures 1-1/2 times the window width. Giant buttonholes (ours are roughly 3 inches), spaced 18 inches apart, loop over the knobs, creating deep swags that soften the look. Sizing the mounting board and panels to hang partly outside the window edge adds width and grace to a narrow opening.
We also hung sheer panels directly over the window for greater privacy and a lush, layered appearance. Mount knobs on either side of the window, approximately three-fourths of the way down, for tiebacks. This type of treatment works best when the draperies don't need to be opened and closed on a regular basis; daily buttoning and unbuttoning could be bothersome.

easy.
How-To Hint: Slip doorknobs through extra-large buttonholes to hang this swagged treatment. To attach the doorknobs to the mounting board, plug each knob hole with a dowel. Countersink the knob onto the board (we used 1x4 lumber) and secure it from the back with a countersunk screw. Bolt the board to the wall. Countersink the bolts and fill the holes with wooden plugs for a professional finish.
