From three sheets of 3/4-inch Baltic birch plywood or one sheet of regular birch plywood, cut:
- Four shelf box top/bottom panels (F), 31-1/2 x 16 inches
- Four shelf box side panels (G), 16 x 14 inches.
- Four wine rack top/bottom panels (H), 15-1/2 x 16 inches
- Four wine rack side panels (I), 16 x 16 inches
From a half-sheet of 1/2-inch birch plywood, cut:
- Four wine rack dividers (J), 21-1/2 x 15 inches
- From a half-sheet of 1/4-inch birch plywood, cut:
- Two shelf box back panels (K), 31-1/4 x 13-1/4 inches
- Two wine rack back panels (L), 15-1/4 x 15-1/4 inches
From 3/4-inch (inside diameter) galvanized pipe, cut with a hacksaw:
- Four legs (M), 66 inches long
- 20 horizontal braces (N), 16-3/4 inches long
- Sixteen #21-5 Kee Klamp 90-degree side outlet tees
- Four #20-5 Kee Klamp side outlet elbows
- Four #61-5 Kee Klamp flanges
- Wood glue, 4d finishing nails, wood putty, and polyurethane
1. Using a table saw, cut a rabbet along the upper and lower edges of each shelf box side panel (G), then cut a 1/4-inch-wide rabbet along the rear edge of all the shelf box top panels and bottom panels (F) to accept the 1/4-inch plywood shelf box back panels (K).
2. Glue and clamp the boxes together, then rout a 1/2-inch chamfer around inside edge of the box opening. Drive 4d finishing nails at the joints to reduce clamping time, if desired. Countersink the nails with a nail set and fill the holes with wood putty. Apply two coats of polyurethane to all plywood components with a paintbrush, letting dry, then sanding lightly between coats.
3. Repeat Step 1 to construct wine-rack boxes. With the boxes assembled, check the inside diagonal measurement and cut the wine rack dividers (J) 1/16 inch shorter so they will easily slide into place. Rout a 1/2-inch chamfer along both sides of the divider ends to reveal the wood's plies, and cut two 3/4 x 7-1/2-inch half-lap notches in their centers. Brush on two coats of polyurethane to dividers, letting dry, then sanding lightly between coats.
4. To assemble the base, install a horizontal brace (N) between each of the two pairs of elbow fittings and the eight pairs of tee fittings.
5. Install the assembled brace sections on one leg (M), spacing them as indicated in Diagram 1. With the elbow and tee fittings locked to one leg, slide another leg into position, forming a ladder; lock the second leg to the fittings. Repeat this process for the two remaining legs.
6. With one ladder lying on a flat surface, fittings pointed up, install the remaining braces. Fit the other ladder atop the braces. (Note: It may take some minor adjusting of the second ladder assembly to get the fittings and braces to line up properly.)
7. Install the flanges on the bottom of the legs. Fit the shelf and wine rack boxes in the rack, adjusting the spacing between braces as needed.
