Easy Painted Floorcloth
Get a customized floor covering for a bedroom or other living space by sponge-painting microsuede. Follow our simple steps to get the look.
- Painter's tape
- Latex paints: sage green, blue, indigo, lavender, and antique white
- Sea sponge
- Paint tray
To make a floorcloth from microsuede, sew heavyweight canvas to the back of the suede so that the suede will lie flat and smooth against the floor. Hem edges. For best results, paint the microsuede before you sew the canvas to it.
- On the right side of the microfiber floorcloth, use painter's tape to mark off a rectangle pattern.
- Load a clean, dry sea sponge with sage green paint, dabbing any excess paint back onto the paint tray.
- Dab the loaded sponge inside the center-most rectangle, reloading the sponge with paint as necessary. While the paint is still wet, dab a light mix of sage green plus antique white on top of the darker shade to create the subtle sponge pattern shown.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the next-largest rectangle using two shades of lavender paint.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the outermost rectangle, using two shades of blue paint. Allow the cloth to dry thoroughly before walking on it, at least 24 hours. (Do not drag furniture across the painted areas as this may scratch the design.)
