What You Need
  • Squares of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) in desired dimensions
  • Medium- and fine-grit sandpaper
  • Wood sealer
  • Krylon Make-It-Stone: antique white
  • Latex paints: blue, sage, lavender, and antique white
  • Household paintbrush
  • Paper towels

Instructions
  1. Sand the MDF squares with medium- then fine-grit sandpaper.
  2. Apply wood sealer; let dry.
  3. For the large backing squares follow the instructions for "Hammered-Pewter Finish," on page 2.
  4. For the small art squares, apply Krylon Make-It-Stone spray paint. Let dry.
  5. Base-coat one square each with blue, sage, and lavender.
  6. Mix antique white with a small amount of each base coat color. To dry-brush highlights on each square, dip a household paintbrush into the light tint of the base-coat color, brush back and forth on a paper towel until only a tiny bit of color remains, then apply the highlights in a diagonal pattern. Let dry.
