Simple Sponging Paint Techniques

Want to try a painting technique but don't know where to start? Sponging may be just the project for you!

A favorite among both amateurs and novices, sponging is a decorative paint technique anyone can master. Requiring a minimum of tools and steps to complete, this basic decorative finish yields dramatic results. No two rooms will look the same because there are endless possible color combinations and each individual painter will apply the glaze in a unique way.

Just follow our no-fail steps and study the how-to photos for can-do confidence. In no time at all you'll be ready to tackle your walls and sponge your way to success. And even if you mess up, its easy to fix less than perfect spots.

For inspiration, we've also included additional color samples, but let your imagination be your guide as you pick a color combination that's perfect for you.


What You Need:
  • Benjamin Moore paints: Jack O'Lantern 2156-30 and Harvest Brown 2104-30. NOTE: Satin sheen is preferred but semigloss works too; flat is not recommended.
  • Benjamin Moore Studio Finish latex glaze in Clear
  • Paint roller for base coat
  • Wide painter's tape
  • 2 plastic paint buckets
  • Paint stir stick
  • Paper plates
  • 2 natural sponges
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Trim brush or sponge roller
