Hand-Painted Wallpaper How-To

Taking the time to hand-paint an intricate pattern on wallpaper is worth it when the results are so stunning. Try this technique in a small room, such as a bathroom or closet, so the time-consuming work doesn't overwhelm you.

Victorian-inspired motifs and a passion for flow blue china inspired this gorgeous look. Use your own favorite designs as a starting point for creating this look in your own home.

What You Need
  • Paintable wall covering (preprimed Creative Artist wallpaper)
  • Plaid FolkArt acrylic paint: Baby Blue #442 (BB), French Blue #639 (FB), Sterling Blue #441 (SB), Ivory White #427 (IW), Country Twill #602 (CT), Denim Blue #721 (DB)
  • Plaid Neutral Wall Glaze #53551 (NG)
  • Blue pencil
  • Plaid Brushes: Wall Weaver #30112, 5/8-inch stencil #34058
  • Plaid Palm stencil roller #34020
  • Sandpaper: 220-grit
  • Marine sponge
  • Plastic wrap or clear plastic bags
  • Professional paper-hanging tool kit
  • Gardener Gibson Dynamite Heavy Duty Clear wallpaper adhesive

Instructions
  1. Measure each section of your wall carefully. Cut wallpaper into strips that are 6 inches longer than the section measurements. Mark the back of each strip with an X so you can distinguish it from the front.
  2. Create stencil patterns as desired; this design required six stencils.
  3. Prepare your paint. You will use six colors: BB, FB, and SB, plus lighter shades of the three created by adding IW to each. Finish by adding 1 ounce NG to 2 ounces of each of the six colors to create a stencil paint consistency.
  4. Experiment with stencil placement and coloration on a wallpaper scrap before painting on the wallpaper. Paint one color in each stencil overlay, using various brushes and rollers for the desired effect. Make quick, rough applications to apply uneven coverage. Allow to dry and make any adjustments needed on design and coloration on the sample.
  5. Mark half-inch borders on the left and right of each wallpaper section, using a blue pencil (lead will smear). Working within these borders, position stencils; paint.
  6. Apply a wash made of 8 ounces NG mixed with 8 ounces water and 1 ounce DB; dry.
  7. Allow paper to dry completely, then sand with 220-grit sandpaper to distress spots where color is deeper than you'd like. Roll up the paper to keep it from getting wrinkled or stepped on, and set aside.
  8. Mix a wash using 8 ounces NG, 8 ounces water, and 1 ounce CT.
  9. Working with one section at a time, lay paper flat and saturate the marine sponge with wash. Rub onto the paper quickly, covering all areas. While the wash is still wet, use the wall weaver brush in crisscross movements to evenly cover the surface. Randomly lay plastic wrap or plastic bags onto moist areas to create the look of wrinkles.
  10. Using the paper-hanging tool kit and wallpaper adhesive, hang the paper, trimming the half-inch borders to fit each section.
