3. When it's dry, paint the piece with the lighter top color using long, even strokes. (Don't paint over the top coat or the paint won't crackle.) The paint will crackle in the direction it was brushed.



4. When the top coat is dry, you can paint over it with an antiquing medium or a diluted brown paint to give the wood an aged look. Brush the paint on, then remove the excess with a lint-free rag. You can also seal the paint with a matte or satin-finish polyurethane.
