A Hole New Chair
Give a chair a starring role in the dining room creating this fancy star pattern and a border along the edge. Here's how.
- Use a photocopier to enlarge both patterns, directional, to the desired size. (Our star's holes are 1-3/8, 3/4, 1/2, 3/8, 1/4, and 1/8 inches in diameter, and the entire star is 8 inches across. Our border's holes are 1/4 and 1/8 inches.)
- Use spray adhesive to temporarily affix the paper patterns to the back of the chair where you'd like them. (Our star is centered horizontally and slightly above vertical center. Our border runs near the bottom edge of the chair back.)
- If your star and border are smaller or larger than ours, measure each hole with a ruler or tape measure. Gather all of the appropriate-size drill bits, woodboring bits, and/or hole saw attachments.
- Beginning in the center with the largest hole, drill through the paper and the chair back. Switch to the next-smaller drill bit or hole-saw attachment, and drill again through the paper and chair back. Repeat until all holes are cut.
- Remove the paper from the chair back and discard, then sand the holes and their edges smooth. Wipe with a tack cloth to remove dust.
