Isle of Style
An energetic tween gets her dream room -- a painted tropical paradise.
Every room design has a starting point, and in this tween space, there was no doubt: The theme had to be Hawaiian tropic, but not surfer girl. With that in mind, this room was created to reflect the high-energy lifestyle of a tween girl. By mixing natural tones with splashy hues, the room's color palette became obvious. The rest -- punchy bedding, fun desk doodads, and a woven window shade -- flowed like lava into a room that coordinates without being "matched." An ocean-blue ceiling blankets the whole space with a sense of tropical rest and relaxation.
Woven furnishings will grow with a tween girl beyond her love of splashy island colors. In addition to a woven full-size bed, this room features a large woven storage basket as a nightstand. Filled with silk hibiscus blooms and covered with an inexpensive glass round, this is one idea that can be used in any room of the house.
A favorite fabric inspired the playful flowers and vine, which were painted freehand using a variety of brushes. You also can use stencils to get a perfect floral flourish. A brightly painted desk and chair help pull the color scheme off the walls and into the room. They also offset the neutral beige and brown of the woven bed, nightstand, and lounging chair.
