Heavy Metal Teen Room
DIY Underbed Drawer Project
To graduate a boy's room from child to tween, capitalize on metal materials such as decorative aluminum radiator grilles.
To gain lots of extra storage, try using the space under the bed to full advantage. See below for instructions on making handy underbed storage drawers.
- Measure height from floor to bottom of bed frame; subtract 2 inches to get the overall height of drawers. (NOTE: You may wish to subtract a few extra inches if your casters are large or you wish to clear bed linens.)
- Measure width under the bed from inside leg to inside leg; divide by three and subtract 2 inches to get the overall width of each of three drawers.
- Construct wooden boxes using screws and 1-inch-wide wooden planks for the sides, backs, and bottoms.
- Seal with polyurethane; let dry.
- Use 2-1/4-inch pieces of wood to construct a front frame for each box.
- Prime and paint frames; let dry.
- Use tin snips to cut decorative radiator grille 1 inch larger than the frame opening, and secure to the back of each frame using screws or narrow pieces of trim molding.
- Screw a handle to the top of each frame, then screw each frame to a box.
- Attach four 2-inch utility casters to the bottom of each box.
- Fill with treasures and slide under the bed.
