2 Easy Lampshade Projects
Ribbon Ruffle Shade
- Drum shade (we chose one 10 inches tall x 10 inches in diameter at the top x 12 inches in diameter at the bottom.
- 1-1/2-inch-wide ribbon
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating thread
- Hot-glue gun and glue
- This embellishment works with any type of lampshade. We chose a drum shade.
- Select desired ribbon. We chose a 1-1/2-inch-wide striped polyester ribbon. The circumference of the top and bottom of the shade and the tightness of gathering you prefer will determine how much ribbon you need. We used about two times the circumference of the top and two times the circumference of the bottom, which equaled about 12 feet of ribbon.
- Use your sewing machine to sew a gathering stitch (the longest stitch setting on your machine) 1/16 inch left of center on the ribbon.
- Repeat, sewing a gathering stitch 1/16 inch just right of center on the ribbon.
- Holding one end of the ribbon, pull the two bobbin threads to gather the ribbon.
- Stop occasionally to work the gather down the length of ribbon, then continue to hold and pull until all ribbon is gathered.
- Starting at the back of the shade, tack one end of the gathered ribbon to the top of the shade using a hot-glue gun.
- Wrap the ribbon around the top of the shade twice, tacking in place with hot glue every 2 inches. Cut and fold the end under, securing with hot glue at the back of the shade.
- Repeat around the bottom of the shade.
Tip: Overlap the ribbons slightly so you don't see the shade between the two rows.
Variations: For a simpler look, just wrap the bottom of the shade. For a more whimsical style, wrap the entire shade with ribbon.
