Can-Do Coffee Tables
You'll have as much fun making any one of these coffee tables as you will showing it off -- and it will only take an afternoon.
Sign of the Times
Colorful, graphic, and versatile, these tables look great in a group or standing alone. Wheels make it easy to position them wherever they're needed.
For each coffee table, you'll need one vintage or reproduction sign, two 2x4s cut the length of the sign, and caster-type wheels. Look for vintage signs at flea markets and antiques stores. Casters come in all sizes and colors to complement the signs and are available at specialty shops and farm-supply stores; purchase ones with wheel locks if you want your table to be stationary.
Paint the 2x4s black or a color to match the sign. Once dry, position the 2x4s beneath the sign to serve as a surface for securing the wheels; the 2x4s also help prevent the sign from bending. Using a drill bit for metal, drill through the top of the sign at each corner and into each 2 x 4. Secure each 2x4 to the sign with bolts and nuts. Screw the casters into the wood.
If you'd like to arrange two or more sign coffee tables in a group, vary the heights by stacking more than one set of 2x4s beneath the signs. Use screws to secure 2x4 layers together, then add casters. Or, look for casters in different sizes to change the height.
