Soft Landings
You won't lose sleep trying to finish these projects. Just start with a purchased duvet cover and pillowcases, then add a personal touch with our simple techniques.
Get Your Zzzzzs
Pick paint colors to match your room, then stencil purchased or hand-cut letters all over the bedcover. Choose Zs, your monogram, or words such as "sleep" and "bedtime."
- Duvet cover (we used a queen-size chambray cover with a white edge; plain chambray or other solid-color duvet covers would work equally well. See the page "Make a Duvet Cover" for do-it-yourself instructions)
- Matching shams
- Purchased stencils in various sizes (or see below)
- Masking tape
- Crafts paints in purple, olive green, and light yellow green
- Textile medium
- Stencil brush
Additional materials to make your own stencils:
- Computer, printer, and paper
- Crafts knife with a new blade
- Stencil paper or thick acetate
- Straightedge
1. Make your stencils. (If you bought stencils, proceed to Step 2.) Select letters in desired fonts on a computer; enlarge and print. Note: Letters with straight lines are easiest to cut out. Place stencil paper or thick acetate atop computer-generated letters on a cutting mat. Cut out the letters with a crafts knife, using a straightedge as a guide.
2. Arrange stencils on duvet cover. Lay duvet cover on a large, flat surface, with the right side up. Tape stencils randomly to top.
3. Paint. Mix 2 parts crafts paint with 1 part textile medium. Using a stencil brush, fill in stencil letters using a small circular motion (see Photo 1). Let dry; remove stencils.
4. Heat-set according to instructions on textile medium.
5. Paint shams. Center a stencil on each sham, tape in place, then follow Steps 3 and 4.
