Felted Wool Folk Art Wreath

Vibrant colors pop from this wool wall hanging. Black pearl cotton blanket stitches give each piece texture and lend an overall folk art appearance.

What you'll need:

  • 19 inch square of black felted wool (applique foundation)
  • Scraps of felted wool in assorted colors (penny and tongue appliques)
  • Freezer paper
  • No. 12 pearl cotton: black

    Finished size: 18 inches square

Download patterns here.

  1. To felt wool, machine-wash it in a hot-water-wash, cool-rinse cycle with a small amount of detergent; machine-dry on high heat and steam-press.
  2. Lay freezer paper, shiny side down, over the downloaded patterns. Trace each pattern the number of times indicated in cutting instructions. Cut out freezer-paper shapes just outside drawn lines.
  3. Using a hot, dry iron, press the freezer-paper shapes, shiny sides down, onto the right sides of designated fabrics; let cool. Cut out fabric shapes on drawn lines. Peel off freezer paper.

From assorted wools, cut in this order:

  • 3 of Pattern A
  • 4 each of patterns E and F
  • 43 each of patterns B and D
  • 40 of Pattern C

1. To make small penny appliques, center 40 C circles atop 40 B circles, mixing colors in a pleasing manner (Diagram 1). Then place 40 D circles atop these pairings. Baste in place.

2. To make large penny appliques, center remaining B circles atop three A circles, again mixing colors in a pleasing manner (Diagram 2). Then place three D circles atop these pairings. Baste in place.

3. To make tongue appliques, place four E circles atop four F tongues, centering the circles on the oval ends (Diagram 3). Baste in place.

4. Using black pearl cotton, blanket-stitch the small circles to the larger circles and tongues. To blanket-stitch, pull your needle up at A (Blanket Stitch Diagram), form a reverse L shape with the floss, and hold the angle of the L shape in place with your thumb. Push your needle down at B and come up at C to secure the stitch. Continue in the same manner.

  1. Lay out the small and large penny appliques in the shape of a wreath (about 16-1/2 inches in diameter with a 4- to 5-inch-diameter center opening) on the black wool square. Overlap and rearrange pennies until you are pleased with how it looks. Randomly tuck the tongue appliques into the outer edge of wreath.
  2. When you are pleased with the wreath arrangement, baste in place.
  3. Using black pearl cotton, blanket-stitch the appliques in place, working from the bottom layer to the top.
  4. Trim the black wool foundation to 18-1/2 inches square.
  5. Frame as desired.
