Modern Pillows
- 2/3 yard of Fabric H
- 1/3 yard of Fabric I
- 1/2 yard of Fabric J
- Point turner
- 18-inch pillow form
- 1-1/2-inch-diameter covered button
- 5-inch-long hand-sewing needle
- All measurements include 1/2-inch seam allowances unless otherwise noted. The pillow measures 22 inches across.
- Cut the Fabric: From Fabric H, cut one 19 x 20-1/2-inch rectangle for the back overlapping panel. Cut one 19 x 5-1/2-inch rectangle for the back underlapping panel. Cut two 10-inch squares for the top left and bottom right front panels.
- From Fabric I, cut two 10-inch squares for top right and bottom left front panels. From Fabric J, cut four 3 x 19-inch strips for the front and back top and bottom flanges. Cut four 3 x 23-inch strips for the front and back side flanges.
- Begin Sewing: With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, join the top left and top right front panels, then the bottom left and bottom right front panels. Press the seams open. With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, match the seams and stitch the two strips together. Press the seam open.
- With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, sew the front top and bottom flanges to the front top and bottom. Press the seam allowances toward the front. Sew the front side flanges to the front sides. Press the seam allowances toward the front.
- Using the back overlapping panel, press one 19-inch edge over 1 inch to the wrong side. Press the edge over again on itself. Topstitch close to the inner fold edge. Using the back underlapping panel, press and stitch one 19-inch edge over in the same manner. Overlap the finished edge of the overlapping back panel onto the underlapping back panel so that the finished edge of the underlapping panel is under the overlapping panel. Machine-baste the top and bottom edges together.
- With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, sew the back side flanges to the back sides. Press the seam allowances toward the back. Sew the back top and bottom flanges to the back top and bottom. Press the seam allowances toward the back.
- With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, sew the front to the back. Trim the seam allowances to 1/4-inch. Leaving 1/8-inch of fabric, trim away the excess fabric at each corner. Press the seam allowances open as much as possible. Turn the cover right side out through the back overlap opening. Using a point turner, push out the corners. Press the cover flat.
- Match the inner flange edges of the front to the back, and pin the pieces together. With matching thread, topstitch just inside the inner flange edges, creating the pillow insert space and the flange area. Insert the pillow form into the space through the back overlap opening.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions to cover a 1-1/2-inch-diameter button with Fabric J. Using a double length of upholstery thread and a 5-inch-long needle, attach the covered button to the center top of the pillow.
- Tie the thread into a double-knotted bow on the pillow back for easy removal of the button when laundering.
