House Tour: A Family-Friendly Home

See how these homeowners balance sophisticated tastes with kid-friendly decor to create a happy home for the whole family.

    Everything in this slideshow

    • A Delicate Balance

With four children under the age of 7, the owners of this home know a thing or two about the importance of kid-friendly decor. But rather than sacrifice their sophisticated style -- or declare adult spaces off-limits to the little ones -- the couple strived to reach a happy compromise. Here, straw floor pillows hide an imperfect fireplace and can also shift into playthings for the kids' imaginative play.

    • Collected Comforts

The formal living room is used for grown-up gatherings and quiet play. An eclectic mix of furniture and accessories creates a warm, lived-in feeling in the sunny room. Warm off-white walls and furniture create a neutral backdrop for patterned throw pillows, artwork, and the beautiful tiled fireplace surround.

    • Royally Suited

A pair of French Colonial chairs in the living room looks fit for a princess and offer the perfect spot for a tea party for playtime and for paying bills or doing homework during work time. Practical and pretty stain-resistant upholstery can stand up to any less-than-royal spills. A built-in window seat offers a cozy perch to read and relax.

    • Ageless Artwork

Ornately framed kids' artwork provides an interesting style contrast in the home's entryway. While the frames look formal and traditional, nodding to the home's Victorian Era styling, their brightly colored contents look playful and keep the narrow space from looking too stuffy.

    • Kid-Tested, Style-Approved

A mix of antique collectibles and kid-friendly accessories meets in the home's dining room. Each night, the family sits down for dinner on hand-me-down Chippendale chairs. Meanwhile, the sturdy modern table is topped with kid-proof concrete. The antique buffet table provides display space for art pieces and a retro glass-bottom lamp.

    • On Display

A large dining room hutch offers display space for collectible dishware and storage for books. The scratched surface, emphasized by reflective high-gloss black paint, provides a contrast to warm off-white walls and the wood dining set, which conveys the dining room's vintage, eclectic vibe.

    • Small- Space Savvy

Smart storage prevents kitchen gadgets and utensils from overtaking the small kitchen. A narrow wooden table was converted into an island, providing extra prep space for meals and kid-accessible storage for baking supplies. Although the island is small, it adds much-needed counter space, while leaving plenty of room to maneuver around the kitchen. To keep the space from feeling overcrowded, the homeowners skipped a wall filled with upper cabinets in favor of windows that let in natural light.

    • A Worth-It Sacrifice

To incorporate extra living space, the homeowners sacrificed a bedroom to create this sunny family room. The round table and kid-size chairs offer the perfect spot to host breakfast and snack time. Pops of bright green add character to the neutral space, while a woven rug adds a splash of natural texture. For quick defense against spills -- common occurrences with the little ones racing around -- the homeowners always keep an extra sofa slipcover on hand.

    • Creative Play

To adapt the not-so-big Victorian Era home for modern family life, the homeowners had to get creative with space. Here, a sitting room off the front hallway has been converted into a dual arts-and-crafts area and mudroom. Colorful bins and galvanized containers fill a shelving unit and keep supplies organized.

      Superhero Hues

Bright, happy colors are the common denominator in the kids' bedrooms. The homeowners sent the boys' bunk beds to an auto-body shop to receive a fresh coat of fire-engine red paint. The durable paint job will last for years and can stand up to the boys' rough-and-tumble play. An underbed drawer stores a trundle bed that provides extra sleeping space for friends.

      Room to Grow

Feminine but not too frilly, this sunny room will stand the test of time as the homeowners' daughter grows. A simple white daybed and end table blend with white walls and carpeting to help visually expand the small space. Green silk drapes add princess luxury to the space but are sophisticated and versatile enough to carry over into a more grown-up version of the room in later years. A playful banner pairs the colors of the draperies with the hot pink storage chest.
