Summer is no time for fussing over formal flower arrangements. A snip-and-stash approach makes imaginative use of ingredients that you have on hand. Use whatever is blooming in the yard, displayed in creative containers found in the kitchen.
Give your bud vases a break and enlist the services of small creamers and other shapely containers, such as this olive oil can. The more unlikely and humble the object, the better; interest increases with unexpectedness. For impact, cluster containers of the same material (stainless is shown here, but glassware, creamware, or patterned pottery works, too) on a windowsill. The pint-size vessels show off a couple of cuttings of freesia and vinca, without depleting the garden.
Every kitchen has them: odds-and-ends bottles that have outlived their contents of vinegar, oil, or wine. Add new meaning to recycling by reclaiming the bottles as vases. Group about eight of differing shapes, sizes, labels, and colors, then add a couple of willowy wildflowers, grasses, or branches to each at staggered heights. When backlit, even weeds are cast in a soft, new light.
