a most important aspect to using a dark wall color is to be sure to use a base tint coat (for our rich wine color the underbase was a dark grey; it creates a richer color and you don't have to use more than a couple coats of red paint; otherwise, you are painting coat after coat of paint to cover all the light color wall underneath; I recommend Sherwin Williams paints totally.
