Mix and Match China
Collect a potpourri of chinaware from garage sales and flea markets.
Red and White Transferware
Like a varied guest list, a china collection is often a blend of mismatched teacups and saucers, unified by similar colors, patterns, or motifs.
Lots of pattern can be a visually overwhelming, however, so consider complementing the patterned pieces with solid color or glass plates. Or, use color-on-color plates to complement; for example, white-on-white patterns have subtle variances that add interest without changing color.
Creative use of some ordinary dishware -- in this case, milk glass serving pieces -- can produce extraordinary results. Vintage stemware, such as the milk glass shown here, is relatively easy to find at flea markets and yard sales. The charm and bold character of these cast-offs helps them hold their own when combined with other vintage pieces.
