In its former state, this under-the-eaves guest room was appointed with an iron bed, vintage quilt, and two mismatched side tables -- all the elements to make it charming. But overall, the room lacks oomph. The bare walls and anemic fabric colors leave the eye bored.

  • A vintage chenille bedspread replaces the quilt, which is draped casually across the foot of the bed. Chenille introduces textural interest and provides more punchy color on the spotlight-worthy bed.
  • About 10 new pillows plump up the head of the bed. The key here is to cover each one differently for quiltlike appeal, but coordinate the lot with similar colors or repeated trims.
