Wedding Etiquette: When to Tip Your Vendors
Before you set your final wedding budget, consider leaving some extra money aside for tipping. Here is everything you need to know about tipping your vendors.
Vendors Shouldn't Expect a Tip: Give them a little extra cash only if they have done an exceptional job and you want to show them gratitude.
Ask First: Ask your reception site if they include an extra service charge (a.k.a. a tip) in your overall bill.
Plan Ahead: Set up envelopes with vendors' names and tips enclosed. Make sure you clearly label them, such as Amy -- Hair Stylist.
Assign Delivery Duties: Since you will be busy entertaining guests, ask a bridesmaid, groomsmen, or your parents to deliver the tips for you. Make sure they know who is who, so the tip is delivered to the right person.
Always Write a Thank You: Even if you don't tip your vendors it's very considerate to write them a thank you when you return from your honeymoon. Include photos of your big day and thank them for being a part of making your wedding a success.
Limo Driver: 10 to 15 percent is usually added to your bill at the end of the night, but ask to be sure
Bartenders and Wait staff: If it's not already in the bill add 15 to 20 percent of the total bill just like you would at a restaurant or bar.
Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist: If you are getting your makeup and hair done on location you don't necessarily have to tip, although you should if they give you the hair and makeup of your dreams. If you are at a salon be sure to tip 15 to 20 percent. Make sure your bridesmaids are also tipping their stylist.
Officiate: Make a donation to the church of at least $100. A larger percentage of your budget is a nice gesture and is greatly appreciated.
Musicians: For your band, string quartet, or DJ give $10 to $20 tips per person, it's easiest to give an envelope to the leader of the group and tell him to distribute to all members.
Photographer/Videographer: It's optional for you to tip your photographer and videographer but if you are pleased with their work then a tip of $50 is perfect.
Florist and Other Deliveries: Remember, they will be doing the most lifting, carrying, and setting up. So show them your gratitude for all their hard work on your big day by tipping $10 to $20 per staff member
Wedding Planner: Depending on how involved your wedding planner was in your big day (full-fledge planner or day-of coordinator) a generous gift of 10 percent your total bill is much appreciated. After all, she did keep you sane and allow you to enjoy your big day.
