The wedding cake experts at Wilton Enterprises recommend these guides for cutting round and square wedding cake tiers.

For standard layer cakes, the cut pieces will measure approximately 1 x 2 inches by two layers high (about 4 inches).

Besides the general guidelines listed below, you can download a page of free patterns for wedding cake cutting. (Downloading requires Adobe Acrobat software.)

Round Tiers
  • Cut a circle approximately 2 inches from the tier's outer edge, then slice 1-inch pieces within the circle.
  • Cut another circle 2 inches in from the first cut circle and slice 1-inch pieces within that circle.
  • Continue in this manner until the entire tier is cut.

Square Tiers
  • Cut a section 2 inches from the tier's outer edge, then slice this section into 1-inch pieces of cake.
  • Then move in another 2 inches and slice again until the entire tier is cut.
