The bed skirt fits a standard-sized crib.
You Will Need:- Refer to the Fabric
- 3 1/2 yards of Fabric A
- 7/8 yards of Fabric D
- 5/8 yards of Fabric E
- 6 1/4 yards of white pom-pom fringe
- 6 1/4 yards of white rickrack trim
- Water-soluble marking pen
Quantities specified are for 44/45 inch-wide cotton fabrics. All seam allowances are 1/2 inch unless otherwise specified.
Cut the Fabric:1. From Fabric E, cut a 53 3/4 x 27 3/4 inch rectangle for the deck. Cut two 36 3/4 x 11 inch strips across the grain for the skirt ends. With right sides facing and short raw edges aligned, sew the fabric lengths together. Press the seam allowance open. Trim the pieced strip to measure 70 1/2 x 11 inch for one skirt side. Repeat to make one more 70 1/2 x 11 inch strip for the opposite skirt side.
2. From Fabric D, cut two 36 3/4 x 4 inch strips across the grain for the skirt ends. With right sides facing and short raw edges aligned, sew the fabric lengths together. Press the seam allowance open. Trim the pieced strip to measure 70 1/2 x 4 inch for one skirt side. Repeat to make one more 70 1/2 x 4 inch strip for the opposite skirt side.
3. From Fabric A, cut two 36 3/4 x 3 inch strips across the grain for the skirt ends.
Sew the Skirt Ends1. With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, sew the pom-pom fringe to one long edge of one Fabric E skirt end strip. With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, sew one long edge of the Fabric D skirt end strip to the pom-pom fringe edge of the Fabric E skirt end strip. Overcast the seam with a zig-zag stitch. Press the seam allowance towards the plaid fabric.
2. With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, sew one long edge of the Fabric A skirt end strip to the remaining long edge of the Fabric D skirt end strip. Overcast the seam as before and press the seam allowance toward the Fabric A strip.
3. Turn and press each side edge under 3/4 inch to the wrong side. Fold each edge under again 3/4 inch and press. Sew close to the inner folded edge to hem the skirt end sides.
4. Turn and press the bottom edge under 1/2 inch to the wrong side. Fold the pressed edge under so the pressed edge meets the Fabric D strip/Fabric A strip seam. Pin from the wrong side so the pressed under edge slightly covers the seam. With right side facing up, hem the bottom folded edge just to the left of the seam. Remove pins while stitching. Sew rickrack trim over the Fabric D strip/Fabric A strip seam.
5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to make an additional skirt end.
6. Using a water-soluble marking pen, measure and mark 4" inward from each short hemmed edge on the skirt end. With wrong sides facing, fold and press the fabric on the mark. With right side facing up, bring the folded edge over to meet the short-hemmed edge, forming half of a box pleat as shown in the Bed Skirt Assembly diagram, below. Press the pleat well and pin the top edge of the pleat in place along the unfinished edge.
Sew the Skirt Sides1. Follow Steps 1 through 5 of "Sew the Skirt Ends" to make each skirt side. Substitute corresponding skirt side strips in place of skirt end strips. Make two skirt sides.
2. Aligning the short edges, fold one skirt side in half to find the center; mark with a water-soluble marking pen. Measure and mark 4 inches to either side of the center mark. With wrong sides facing, fold and press the fabric on the side marks. Bring each folded edge inward to meet the center mark, forming a box pleat as shown in the Bed Skirt Assembly diagram. Press the pleat well and pin the top edge of the pleat in place along the unfinished edge. Measure and pleat the side edges of each skirt side in the same manner as in Step 6 of "Sew the Skirt Ends".
Assemble the Bed Skirt1. Refer to the Bed Skirt Assembly Diagram. With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, sew the skirt ends to the deck along the short edges. Sew the skirt sides to the deck along the long edges. Press the seam allowances towards the deck. Topstitch the deck close to the seam through all of the layers.
