Felt Snowman Pillow

Rustic buttons accent this soft-as-snow pillow's corners, reinforcing the folk art applique's woodsy theme.

What You Need:
  • Tracing Paper
  • Paper-backed fusible adhesive
  • 1--9x12" piece each of black, burgundy, and white felt
  • Scraps of gold and blue felt
  • Cotton fabric scraps: red-and-cream check, green print, green plaid, and brown print
  • Cotton embroidery floss: black, orange, red, and white
  • Pearl cotton: Size 5 white and burgundy
  • Embroidery needle
  • Scrap paper
  • Erasable fabric marker
  • 1/2 yard of striped cotton fabric
  • Matching sewing thread
  • 4--3/8"-diameter assorted buttons
  • 4--1"-diameter assorted buttons
  • Polyester fiberfill

Instructions:

From the black felt, cut a 6 3/4x10 1/2" rectangle. From the burgundy felt, cut a 5 1/4x 9" rectangle.

Trace the pattern shapes from the pdf link below onto the paper side of the fusible adhesive, leaving 1/2" of space between the shapes. Cut the shapes out about 1/4" beyond the drawn lines. Following the manufacturer's instructions, fuse the snowman on the white felt; the moon on the gold felt; the birds on the blue felt; the scarf on the red-and-cream check; the large tree on the green print; the small tree on the green plaid; and the trunk on the brown print. Cut out the pieces and remove the paper backing.

Referring to the photograph above, arrange the snowman, scarf, trees, trunk, and moon on the burgundy rectangle, and fuse. Use one strand of white floss to make random straight stitches around the snowman. Use red floss to stitch around the scarf and small tree. Use black floss to straight stitch around the moon and the large tree, to make running stitches for the mouth, and to make French knots for the eyes. Straight stitch the carrot nose with orange floss.

Practice writing the lettering on scrap paper, referring to the pattern. Use the erasable marker to write lettering in the top left corner of the burgundy rectangle. Use on strand of white pearl cotton to backstitch over the marker lines. Use one ply of white floss to randomly stitch the stars on the burgundy rectangle. Sew the 3/8"-diameter buttons on the center front of the snowman.

Center the burgundy rectangle on the black rectangle. Use two strands of white pearl cotton to make running stitches 3/16" from the edges of the burgundy rectangle. Arrange the birds on the layered rectangles and fuse. Use black floss to make a French-knot eye on each bird.

From the striped fabric, cut two 10x14" rectangles for the pillow front and back.

Center the layered rectangles on one striped rectangle. Use burgundy pearl cotton to blanket-stitch the layered black felt rectangle to the pillow front. Sew a 1"-diameter button to the pillow front at each corner of the black rectangle.

With right sides together, sew the pillow front to the back, using 1/2" seam allowances and leaving an opening on one side for turning. Clip the corners and turn right side out. Stuff the pillow firmly with fiberfill and slip-stitch the opening closed.
