9 Easy Fabric Projects
Smart Nook
Create your own cozy corner for curling up with a book or magazine, complete with an ottoman slipcover, a window treatment, and a fleece throw.
This window covering features two fabrics and multiple cover options.
Yardage: 2 inches wider and longer than window opening
Time: 1 hour
- Measure the window and add 1 inch all around for seam allowances.
- Cut two panels of coordinating fabrics.
- With wrong sides together, stitch seams in each panel, leaving a 6-inch opening to turn panels right side out.
- Press; slip-stitch openings shut.
- Screw single robe hooks to both sides of window frame.
- Clip curtain rings to the top and bottom of curtain panels; slide curtain rods through rings.
- To cover the window, hang the top rod from the top robe hooks and hang the bottom rod from the lowest hooks. Or open the window covering by lifting the bottom rod to a higher set of hooks.
Give a fleece throw a dressy attitude with a row of ribbons braided down the center.
Yardage: 1 3/4 yards of two colors of fleece for 60-inch-long throw
Time: 2 hours
- Starting 1 inch back from the edges, cut 2-inch-long slots every inch along the edges of contrasting fleece pieces.
- Join the two fleece pieces with ribbons stitched at the ends and braided through the slots.
Slipcover a storage cube with cozy corduroy to use as an ottoman.
Yardage: 1 1/2 yards for an 18-inch storage cube
Time: 1 hour
- Make a pattern by folding one large sheet of paper around the storage cube; cut away excess paper. The pattern should look like a cross shape.
- Lay the pattern on fabric and cut, adding 1-inch seam allowances or hems all around.
- Fold and press seam allowances or hems to wrong side of fabric; secure with stitching or fusible hem tape.
- Add fabric ties or lengths of ribbon to secure the slipcover over the cube.
