Dressing Up Ready-Made Drapes

Pattern Down Under

If standard draperies are too short for your windows and walls, extend them with a bottom band.

See instructions and tips below.

What You Need:
  • Plain purchased drapery panel
  • Coordinating fabric for lower band
  • Drapery fringe

A floral band sewn to the bottom
of draperies extends them
beautifully.
Instructions:

1. Trim the drapery panels to hang 1 1/2 inches below the edge of the window trim. Measure from the drapery bottom to the floor for the depth of the bottom panel. Add 1/2 inch for seam allowances on the top, and 4 inches for a hem. Cut the bottom panel the same width as the drapery panel, allowing for a 1-inch hem on each side. Piece the band as necessary, adding seam allowances.

2. Hem the sides of the lower panel by turning under 1/2 inch, then 1/2 inch again. Turn up 1/2 inch on the bottom edge, then make a 3 1/2-inch hem.

3. Sew the bottom panel to the drapery panel. Topstitch upholstery fringe over the seam.
