Cummerbund Canopy Window Treatment
For maximum control of a budget, spend your dollars on beautiful fabric for one panel and a valance.
- Print fabric in the desired length for your panel plus 4 inches
- Contrasting fabric for the valance and curtain banding (9 inches of fabric for every 3-inch pleat you make)
- Lining fabric for the valance
- Coordinating thread
- To make the pleated valance, construct 3-inch pleats with 3-inch returns. (A return is the fabric that goes back up under the previous pleat.)
- The first pleat fold will be 5 inches down from the top so that you'll have an extra 2 inches for the rod pocket once you've finished all pleats.
- Start by folding the first pleat 5 inches from the top with a 3-inch return.
- Fold the fabric down from the return to prepare for the next pleat; press.
- Open up the pleat front and stitch along the fold line, securing the pleat to the return.
- If you want the edge of the pleat to be free, then stitch about 1 inch above the pleat fold line. Continue, making your pleated valance as deep as you choose.
- Finish at the bottom by leaving 3 inches of fabric plus 1/2 inch for a seam allowance; trim off the excess.
- Cut a lining the same size as your pleated panel.
- With right sides facing, stitch the lining to the pleated panel, using 1/2-inch seam allowances and leaving an opening at the top for turning.
- Turn right side out and steam-press.
- Turn the top 2 inches down to form a rod pocket and hand-stitch in place.
