Draw the Pattern 1. On kraft paper, draw one 36 x 24" rectangle, one 14"-diameter circle, one 16"-diameter circle, and one 25"-diameter circle. Cut out all the pieces.
2. Using the 36 x 24" rectangle for the base pattern and referring to the photograph above right, lay the circles on top of the rectangle. Adjust the circles as desired and trace around each circle onto the rectangle base pattern. Label the pattern pieces A, B, C, and D, left to right. Cut the pieces out along the lines to create four curved section patterns.
Cut the Fabrics 1. To make the best use of your fabrics, cut the pieces in the order that follows.
- From Fabric E, cut: 1 - Pattern A
- From Fabric D, cut: 1 - Pattern B
- From Fabric F, cut: 1 - Pattern C
- From Fabric B, cut: 1 - Pattern D, 2 -3 x 27" rectangles, 2 - 3 x 37" rectangles
- From fleece, cut: 1 - 30 x 40" rectangle
- From extra-loft batting, cut: 1 - 30 x 40" rectangle
- From muslin, cut: 1 - 30 x 40" rectangle
2. Referring to the photograph, cut the curved sections from the corresponding fabrics, adding 1/2" seam allowances all around.
3. Piece the four curved sections together to make the rug top. Clip the curves. The pieced rug top should measure 25 x 36".
4. Layer the pieced rug top, the fleece, the batting, and the muslin together. Baste the layers together.
5. Machine-quilt the rug top in each curved seam line through all of the layers.
6. Topstitch 1/2" inside the outside edge of the rug through all of the layers. Trim the layers the same size as the pieced rug top. Trim the batting and fleece away from the outside seam allowances. Bind the outside edges with Fabric B 3 x 27" strips. Press the binding to wrong side and topstitch in place.
7. In a well-ventilated area, paint the nonskid backing on the muslin.
The rug measures 36 x 24".
