How to Make It

For the pillow forms: Because there are no ready-made pillow forms available for these shapes, you'll need to make forms out of muslin and fiberfill to fit inside your pillow covers. Once you complete the pillow tops, you can use the shape for your pillow-form pattern. Designer Jonathon Bennett recommends making your pillow forms 2 inches larger than your pillow covers. This will help the filling reach all the way into the sharp corners of the pillow cover.

For the modified square pillow: Enlarge and cut out the pattern from above. From fabric, cut one front and one back for each pillow. Mark the centers for tufted buttons before sewing the pieces together. With right sides facing, sew the front to the back, using 1/2-inch seam allowances. Leave an opening along one edge for turning. Turn the pillow right side out and press. Insert your pillow form and hand-stitch the opening closed. Cover two large cover buttons with contrasting fabric and attach them to the center of your pillow.

For the hexagon pillow: Enlarge and cut out the pattern from above. Cut alternating contrasting sections for the front and back, six per side. Stitch three segments together, alternating the colors, and then stitch two of the three-segment sets together for the front of the pillow.

Repeat the alternating and stitching for the back to get two three-segment sets. With right sides together, stitch the two back sets together, stitching in only one-quarter of the way on both edges. This will leave an opening at the center for stuffing the pillow. Press the seam flat, pressing all the way across the opening. (This will make the hand-sewing easier when you finish your pillow.)

With right sides facing, pin the pillow front and back together. Turn the pillow right side out and press. Insert the custom pillow form, folding the form in half and inserting only half at a time. Once you've inserted the entire form into the cover, reach in and push the points of the insert into the points of the cover. Pin the opening together and hand-stitch the opening closed. Make two covered buttons with contrasting fabric and attach them in the center of the pillow.

Corner tassels: Purchase enough yardage of trim to have two tassels per corner. Cut the trim to remove the tassels, leaving enough yarn from the trim tape to hand-stitch to the corners of the pillows.
