Canopy bench, one of three metal benches featured in the Fall 2005 issue of Home Decor Sewing.

The diagrams for the benches on the pages that follow are intended to provide you and/or your fabricator with a general understanding of their construction; your design will need to be adjusted according to the iron pieces you incorporate.

See below for detailed construction information on all three benches.

Converted from an iron headboard or footboard, this bench includes curlicue armrests forged around an anvil. A solid base, made by welding 2-inch pipe and 3/8-inch bars, distributes the weight. For the seat, an apron was fashioned then topped with side-by-side 2x12s.

See below for a detailed construction diagram.

The ends of a crib frame were stabilized with welded 3/4-inch and 1-1/4-inch pipes and 1-inch bars then topped with 3/4-inch plywood and upholstered foam.

See below for a detailed construction diagram.

Bench with canopy

This bench is made by removing one side of an iron crib frame and adding a sturdy seat of 3/4-inch plywood stacked and glued together and finished along the edge with pine trim. Seat and back cushions, plus the fabric canopy, finish the piece. The canopy is created using a half-circle of plywood attached to the wall with L-brackets.
