Make the Checkbook Cover

What You Need
  • 4 -- 18x22" pieces (fat quarters) assorted aqua and- chocolate prints (cover, lining, pockets, binding
  • 1/4 yard medium-weight fusible interfacing
  • 1/4 yard heavyweight double-sided fusible interfacing (such as Fast2Fuse)
  • 1-1/4"-diameter button
  • Elastic ponytail keeper

Finished Checkbook Cover: 7" square (open); 3-1/2x7" (folded)

Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics. Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Cut Your Fabrics

To make the best use of your fabrics, cut the pieces in the following order.

From assorted aqua-and-chocolate prints, cut:
  • 2 -- 7" B squares
  • 2 -- 6x7" A rectangles
  • 1 -- 2x42" binding strip

From medium-weight fusible interfacing, cut:
  • 2 -- 6x7" A rectangles

From heavyweight double-sided fusible interfacing, cut:
  • 1 -- 7" B square

Assemble Pockets

1. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse one fusible interfacing A rectangle to wrong side of an aqua-and-chocolate print A rectangle.

2. With wrong side to the inside, fold fused rectangle in half lengthwise to make a 3x7" rectangle; press folded edge. Topstitch close to fold to make one 3x7" pocket (Diagram 1).

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with remaining fusible interfacing A rectangle and aqua and- chocolate print A rectangle to make a second 3x7" pocket.

Assemble Checkbook Cover

1. Place heavyweight double-sided fusible interfacing B square on wrong side of an aqua-and-chocolate print B square. Following manufacturer's directions, fuse fabric to one side of interfacing to make inside of checkbook cover. Allow to cool.

2. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse remaining B square to opposite side of fused interfacing square to make right side of checkbook cover.

3. Sew button to right side of checkbook cover, centering button 11/4" from outer edge (Diagram 2). Pinch ponytail keeper together; baste together leaving a 11D2" loop at the top. Pin ponytail keeper to right side at opposite end of cover with 11/2" loop extended toward button with remaining loop extended over outer edge. Baste loop in place.

4. Referring to Diagram 3, align raw edges of 3x7" pockets with raw edges of inside of cover; baste around all edges through all layers. Trim off ponytail keeper loop that extends beyond edge of checkbook keeper.

5. Bind with aqua-and-chocolate print binding strip.
