    • Interview a Relative About Your Family History

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Irma featured her mother's favorite photos and memories in this scrapbook album. If you have an eyewitness to your family history, set up an interview. Ask the person to choose a few favorite photos and share his or her memories and perspectives. Compile the information, then journal from the perspective of your family member for a personalized touch. Irma emphasized her theme by placing a simple title -- "photo memories" -- in the photo slot in her album cover.

    • Add Similar Accents Throughout the Album Pages

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Irma shopped for embellishments sold in multiples to use them throughout the album. The cute flower accents, like the one on her cover, appear on every spread.

    • Create a Custom Sketch for Album Pages

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Irma started with a basic sketch of an album spread. Modify the sketch by rotating and flipping the pages and elements to make it interesting while keeping a uniform look.

    • Put Emphasis on a Family Member's Story

      Design by Irma Gabbard

To set the tone for her album, Irma let journaling stand alone on her title page. Using a family member's words as journaling makes pages quick and easy and also preserves precious details.

    • Organize Heritage Photos Chronologically in an Album

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Irma designed each spread around one photo, then organized the photos chronologically to make the story easy to follow. Don't stress about having photos for every year. Irma used only important photos supplied by her mom, skipping years as necessary.

    • Preserve Family Genealogy Photos

      Design by Irma Gabbard

To keep family photos safe, scan and print duplicates of heritage photos instead of using originals. If you decide to work with original photos, attach them with photo corners to prevent any damage in case they need to be removed.

    • Die-Cut Numbers for Heritage Album Dates

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Irma featured the year each family photo was taken on every spread. To ensure you have enough numbers for the dates, make your own with a die-cutting tool and cardstock. Don't have the perfect die cuts? Choose a font, print the dates, and cut them out.

SOURCES: Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper. Patterned paper: Making Memories (ledger), October Afteronon (pink flower), Scenic Route Paper Co. (blue dot), K&Company (all other). • Enhance an Album with Simple Punches

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Tiny punched butterflies made easy embellishments for Irma's heritage album. To bring attention to a small accent, layer and frame the accent on a printed, die-cut journaling tag.

    • Avoid Three-Dimensional Scrapbooking Supplies

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Stay away from bulky embellishments when making an archival album. They can easily dent and ruin photos. Irma used simple, flat flowers combined with paper accents to add interest to her album spreads without harming them.

Stick to a Single Paper Line for Easy Coordination

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Irma worked with a specific line of paper from one manufacturer, supplementing with just a few basic prints from other companies, to keep the look of her heritage album cohesive. To make matching even simpler, select only papers and embellishments from a kit to scrapbook genealogy photos.

      Coordinate Patterned Paper Perfectly

      Design by Irma Gabbard

If the line of paper you're using doesn't contain the perfect accent paper, add basic coordinating prints from other lines as needed. Reserve them for small embellishments to keep the album look cohesive. Irma matted her photos on ledger paper and used a simple polka dot paper for circular accents.

      Design by Irma Gabbard

Irma used her mother's signature at the bottom of her final page to complete the theme. You can have your interviewee sign directly on the page once it's finished, or have him or her sign a blank sheet of paper, then scan and resize the image and position it below your journaling in image-editing software.
