Getting Started

The finished set of four bumper pads fits a standard baby crib. The two end pieces measure 26 1/2 9 3/8 inches each, and the two side pieces measure 51 1/2 x 9 3/8 inches each. Due to variations in shrinkage, finished sizes may vary slightly.

Patchwork Bumper Pads
You Will Need:
  • Refer to the Fabric Key below.
  • 1 7/8 yard of Fabric A
  • 1 3/4 yards of Fabric B
  • 2 1/2 yards of muslin
  • 2 1/2 yards of heirloom batting
  • 2 1/4 yards of 24 inch-wide high-density batting
  • 1 3/4 yards of 3/4 inch-wide white hook-and-loop tape
  • 1/4 yard of fusible webbing
  • 4 1/2 x 4 inch piece of Fabric C
  • 4 1/2 x 16 inch piece of Fabric D
  • 1 square of lemon yellow felt
  • Scrap of poster board
  • Machine embroidery needle
  • Machine darning foot for free motion quilting

Fabric Key
  • Fabric A: White tone-on-tone
  • Fabric B: Light green variegated
  • Fabric C: Pastel green flannel
  • Fabric D: Pastel plaid flannel
  • Fabric E: Pastel yellow dot
  • Fabric F: Yellow chenille
  • Fabric G: Yellow/purple plaid seersucker
  • Fabric H: Yellow plaid seersucker

Instructions:

Quantities specified are for 44/45 inch-wide cotton fabrics. All seam allowances are 1/4 inch unless otherwise specified.


Cut the Fabric

1. From Fabric B, cut ten 4 1/2 x 44 inch strips and three 4 1/2 x 18 inch strips.

2. From Fabric A, cut ten 4 1/2 x 44 inch strips and two 4 1/2 x 18 inch strips. Cut twenty 11 x 2 1/2 inch strips for the ties.

3. From both the muslin and heirloom batting, cut two 22 x 30 inch rectangles and two 22 x 54 inch rectangles.


Assemble the Patchwork

1. Sew the long edges of three 4 1/2 x 44 inch Fabric B strips to two 4 1/2 x 44 inch Fabric A strips, alternating the colors and starting with Fabric B to make a strip set. Press all seam allowances toward the darker color. Repeat to make a second pieced strip set. Cut each of the pieced strip sets into nine 4 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch segments.

2. Sew the long edges of three 4 1/2 x 44 inch Fabric A strips to two 4 1/2 x 44 inch Fabric B strips, alternating the colors and starting with Fabric A. Press all seam allowances toward the darker color. Repeat to make a second pieced strip set. Cut each of the pieced strip sets into nine 4 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch segments.

3. Sew the long edges of three 4 1/2 x 18 inch Fabric B strips to two 4 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch Fabric A strips, alternating the colors and starting with Fabric B. Press all seam allowances toward the darker color. Cut the pieced strip set into four 4 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch segments.


4. Referring to the Bumper Pads, lay out the segments in sets to make two end and two side pieces.

5. Sew the long edges of the segments together, matching the seams, to make two 28 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch rectangles for the ends and two 52 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch rectangles for the sides.
