1. Plan ahead. Determine the number of pavers you will need by measuring the distance to be edged and dividing it by the length of a paver.
2. Mix mortar. Complete this step (and the next two) in a wheelbarrow, and simply hose it out when you're done. Wear rubber gloves. For every two bricks, blend approximately 1 cup mortar mix with water to make a thick paste (similar to pancake batter). Stir minimally with a trowel or your fingers. If mixed mortar begins to dry while you're working, add a bit more water. Avoid overstirring; it weakens finished mortar.
3. Apply mortar. Starting at one end of a paver's longest,
narrowest edge, apply a glob of mortar approximately 1/2- to 3/4-inch thick. Quickly cover the entire edge with mortar. Let mortar spill down the sides for a frosted effect.
4. Frost with glass. Continuing to work quickly, sprinkle crushed, recycled glass onto wet mortar. If desired, sprinkle on more than one color of glass. Gently press glass into mortar, keeping it on paver edge.
5. Dry. Set paver on an unfrosted edge to dry. Let mortar dry for 24 hours.
6. Set pavers. Plant pavers lengthwise along the edge of a garden bed or a pathway by digging a 2-inch-deep trench in the ground where you want to place the edging. Stand pavers in the trench end to end, frosted side up. Backfill around pavers with loosened soil.
