Stitch markers

Size I/9 (5.5mm) crochet and afghan hooks

Blunt-end yarn needle

Plastic canvas


Gauge: 10 sts and 16 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in Garter st. TAKE TIME TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.


With MC, cast on 18 sts. Work in Garter st (k every row) for 1 inch. Eyelet row (RS): K3, yo, k2tog, k8, yo, k2tog, k3. Cont in Garter st until piece measures 3 inches from beg. Next row -- Inc row: K1, inc 1 (k in front and back of st), knit to the last st, inc 1, k1. Cont to inc 1 st each side every 10th row 3 times more -- 26 sts. Work in Garter st until piece measures approx 14 inches from beg.


Place markers each side for Bottom. Cont in Garter st for 3 inches more. Place markers on each side for other edge of Bottom.


Work in Garter st for 4 inches. Next row -- Dec row: K1, k2tog, knit to the last st, k2tog, k1. Cont to dec 1 st each side every 10th row 3 times more -- 18 sts. Work even until piece measures same as Front from last marker to Eyelet row. Eyelet row (RS): K3, yo, 2tog, k8, yo, k2tog, k3. Knit 4 rows and place markers on each side for beg of flap.

Shape Flap

Work in Garter st for 4 inches. Dec 1 st each side on next row, then every other row 6 times more -- 4 sts. Bind off.


With CC, cast on 9 sts. Row 1 (RS): K1, *k1, p1; rep from * twice, end k2. Row 2: P2, *k1, p1; rep from * twice, end p1. Rep Rows 1 and 2 once more. Eyelet row (RS): K1, k2tog, yo, k1, p1, k1, yo, k2tog, k1. Work even in rib as est until piece measures 36-1/2". Eyelet row (RS): K1, k2tog, yo, k1, p1, k1, yo, k2tog, k1. Work in rib for 3 rows more. Bind off in rib.

Strap with Tie (Make 2)

With afghan hook and CC, ch 50. First Half of Row 1: Starting in 1st ch from hook, pull up a lp in each ch across. Second Half of Row 1: Yo and draw through first lp on hook, * yo and draw through 2 lps on hook; rep from * across. First Half of Row 2: Skip 1st vertical bar, *insert hook under next vertical bar and pull up a lp; rep from * across. Work 2nd half of row as for 2nd half of row 1. Ch 60 for tie, turn and sl st in each ch back to strap. Rep 1st and 2nd half of row 2 twice more. Fasten off.


Center WS of Gusset over RS of Bottom (with top of Gusset at flap marker on Back) and sew to 3 sides of Front. Cut a 10-x-3-inch piece of plastic canvas and insert it into Bottom. Sew Gusset to rem sides to encase plastic canvas. With crochet hook and CC, sc around edge of flap. Insert Tie from right side of eyelet opening on one side of Back. Weave Tie through eyelets to center Front. Pull up the Tie until the Strap meets the Back, and sew in place Sew bottom edge of strap to side of gusset at bottom corner of back.


Cut 14 strands of CC, each 11 inches long. Fold strands in half and tie in middle. Wrap a strand of yarn around the folded strands, 1 inch from tie. Attach Tassel to flap as shown.
