Instructions for Cap

Pattern Stitches

Sc2tog (single crochet decrease): Insert hook into st and draw up a lp. Insert hook into next st and draw up a lp. Yo, draw through all 3 lps on hook.

FPsc (front post single crochet): Working from front to back to front, insert hook around post of stitch of row below, yo and draw up a lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hook. Sk st behind FPsc.


Body

Starting at center top with A, ch 2.

Rnd 1 (RS): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook-6 sc.

Rnd 2: * With A, 2 sc in next sc and change to B; with B, 2 sc in next sc and change to C; with C, 2 sc in next sc and change to A; rep from * once more-12 sc.

Rnd 3: In est color sequence, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around-18 sc.

Rnds 4-15: Work rnds as est, inc 6 sc each rnd and maintaining color block pat as est-90 sc at end of Rnd 15. Piece should measure 9" across.

Maintaining color block pat as est, work Rnds 16-28 as follows.

Rnd 16: Sc in first 29 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 14 sc) twice, 2 sc in next sc, sc in rem 30 sc-93 sc.

Rnd 17: Sc in first 29 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 15 sc) twice, 2 sc in next sc, sc in rem 31 sc-96 sc.

Rnds 18 and 19: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 20: Sc in first 29 sc, (sc2tog, sc in next 15 sc) twice, sc2tog, sc in rem 31 sc-93 sc.

Rnd 21: Sc in first 29 sc, (sc2tog, sc in next 14 sc) twice, sc2tog, sc in rem 30 sc-90 sc.

Rnd 22: (Sc2tog, sc in next 13 sc) 6 times-84 sc.

Rnd 23: (Sc2tog, sc in next 12 sc) 6 times-78 sc.

Rnd 24: (Sc2tog, sc in next 11 sc) 6 times-72 sc.

Rnd 25: (Sc2tog, sc in next 10 sc) 6 times-66 sc.

Rnds 26-28: Using A only, sc in each sc around. At end of Rnd 28, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.


Visor

Note: Visor is constructed with 2 layers (inner and outer) and is worked on 26 sc at center front.

Foundation Row: With RS facing, sk first 20 sc from joining on Rnd 28, join A with sl st around post of next sc, ch 1, FPsc in same st, FPsc in next 25 sts; turn-26 sc.

Inner visor

Row 1 (WS): Working in front lps of each st for this row only, with A, ch 1, sc in first 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in rem 8 sc-28 sc; turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 24 sc, sc2tog-26 sc; turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog-26 sc; turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 22 sc, sc2tog-24 sc; turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog-24 sc; turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 20 sc, sc2tog-22 sc; turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog-22 sc; turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 18 sc, sc2tog-20 sc. Fasten off.

Outer visor

Row 1: With RS facing, join A in first rem lp from Foundation Row of Visor. Working in rem lps across, ch 1, sc in same lp as joining and in next 7 lps. Work 2 sc in next lp, sc in 8 lps, 2 sc in next lp, sc in last 8 lps-28 sc; turn.

Rows 2-8: Rep Rows 2-8 of the Inner Visor.


Edging

Note: Size may be adjusted slightly by working the Edging looser or tighter to fit. In either case, work the sc around the Visor tightly; switch to a smaller hook if necessary.

Rnd 1: With RS facing, join A in last st of Rnd 28 on Body at center back; sl st in next 20 sc. Working through double thickness of Inner and Outer Visor and matching sts, sc in row-end st of each of next 7 rows, sk row-end st of Row 8, sc in next 20 sc across front of Visor, sk row-end st of Row 8, sc in each of next 7 row-end sts, sl st in next 20 sc of cap; join with sl st in first sl st. Fasten off.


Finishing

Weave in ends. Dampen the cap and block it by slipping the piece over a 9"-diameter round plate; smooth the top around the form and allow it to dry completely.
