Elegant Knit Cloche

With a flower perched jauntily on the side, this cloche adds style to any ensemble. The posy is easy to create from a simple knitted swatch -- just weave the yarn tail into the bound-off row and gather the fabric into a swirl.

Lion Brand Lion Suede (Art. 210)

100% polyester; 3 oz. (85 g);
122 yds. (110 m); bulky weight

  • 1 ball #125 Mocha (MC)

Lion Brand Trellis (Art. 500)

100% nylon; 1 3/4 oz. (50 g);
115 yds. (105 m); bulky weight

Needles & Extras

  • Blunt-end yarn needle
  • Size 7 (4.5 mm) needles; or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge

12 sts and 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st (knit on RS rows, purl on WS rows) with MC.

Instructions
Hat

With MC, cast on 58 sts.

Rows 1-5: Knit.

Rows 6-9: Work in Reverse St st (purl RS rows, knit WS rows).

Rows 10-13: Knit.

Work even in St st (knit RS rows, purl WS rows) until hat measures 4 1/2 inches from beg, ending with a WS row.

Shape crown-Row 1 (RS): K4, (k2tog, k5) seven times, k2tog, k3 -- 50 sts.

Rows 2-4: Knit.

Row 5: K3, (k2tog, k4) 7 times, k2tog, k3 -- 42 sts.

Rows 6-8: Knit.

Row 9: K2, (k2tog, k3) 7 times, k2tog, k3 -- 34 sts.

Row 10: K1, (k2tog) to last st, k1 -- 18 sts.

Row 11: Rep Row 10-10 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving an 18-inch tail.

Thread tail onto blunt-end yarn needle and draw yarn through stitches on needles; pull tight to close. Sew seam. Weave in loose ends.

Flower

With CC, cast on 120 sts.

Rows 1-4: Knit.

Rows 5: K3, (k2tog, k4) to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1 -- 100 sts.

Rows 6-9: Knit.

Row 10: K2, (k2 tog, k3) to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 -- 80 sts.

Rows 11-14: Knit.

Bind off all sts, leaving a long tail for sewing. Thread tail into blunt-end yarn needle and weave in and out of bound-off row; pull gently on yarn to gather the bound-off edge and form fabric into a spiral. Sew a few stitches at the base of flower top secure flower shape, than attach to hat as desired. Weave in loose ends.
